Optical Illusion + Negative Space research

I was thinking about using optical illusions for the cards to symbolize the different and may symptoms of concussion and MND, so I explored the idea of optical illusions.

I found that there is 3 main types of optical illusions – Literal, Physiological and cognitive illusions. The word “illusion” comes from the Latin word Illudere, which means to “mock”.

Optical illusions are images or pictures that we perceive differently than they really are. Optical illusions occur when our eyes send information to our brains that tricks us into perceiving something that doesn’t not match reality are sometimes called “mind games”.

PHYSIOLOGICAL – they are caused by some sort of physical means in the eyes or the brain.

COGNITIVE – Ambiguous, distorting and paradox illusions, occur when our brains automatically make assumptions based on the information sent from the eyes.

PARADOX – These occur as a result of pictures or objects that cannot exist or physically impossible.

After investigating into optical illusions, I can say I will most definitely carry these through into my ideation process as I personally feel like these will work extremely well when creating the cards as it is quite contemporary but also evocative as it plays around with cognitive and physiological aspects which is what I am experimenting with to showcase these effects of concussion. I will experiment and take forth using colour and black and white colour concepts into the ideation process as I will need to see what colour theory would work for this project as I want it to be striking and contemporary.

I further researched into optical illusions as I wanted to gain more knowledge on this matter to ensure I can portray this into my work. as a graphic designer, it is vital that you do further research into specific topics you want to look at, as this will give you an in depth perspective into this matter.

NEGATIVE SPACE
