I decided to do even further ideation development as I still was not completely happy with my previous ideas. I decided to stick to a more structured, more professional layout, and this could then be placed in other businesses etc. I still added a few contemporary components through out but still keep the editorial quite professional which is vital.
When looking at my previous ideas, I noticed hierarchy was the one thing I was missing through out, so to rectify this, I will ensure this is carried out throughout by experimenting with line weight and point size to highlight keywords and key pieces of information.

I wanted to do more development of my initial ideas for my dissertation as tutorial, eyes I am struggling creatively to create the editorial digitally as I am finding but one idea isn’t really working as well as I would have liked. So, to rectify this, I went back into my research and looked over all of the outcomes I looked into and immediately started to get more ideas for my editorial.
In the end, I decided to go with a more business style approach to my editorial as previously mentioned my dissertation is a CERP paper (creative enterprise research proposal), so to ensure these two aspects relate I will be creating a more business style editorial.
From my research I have taken many different aspects such as possible layout designs, grid system and how to highlight important information.
As a graphic designer, development is always an important factor in our design practice as this shows the client where we have started from but also shows how we don’t stick to one initial idea we always have to develop and develop until we create a really strong concept.

The research I previously carried out on the editorials, I have taken inspiration from each outcome and implemented them all into my ideas.
I have taken aspect I just type, creating strong sense of hierarchy by using various weights and point sizes to create a path for the viewer to follow and to create a sense of direction which is crucial when it comes to an editorial.
I experimented with layers and decreasing the opacity of visuals and type to create depth and dimension. I have also created some visuals such as a brand logo and some possible ideas for tee shirt designs, this will tie the brand and the editorial together as I can showcase this throughout the editorial which will give the viewer a sneak peak of what my brand is about and how I have researched into the business side of things which makes things more personal as it gives the viewer an insight into my thought process.

All the imagery used to create my brand logo and visuals are all based on my South African heritage. Engeltjie – is an Afrikaans term, the Protea is the national flower of South Africa and one of my favourite flowers and the springbok is the national animal of South Africa also so I wanted to incorporate these two main pieces as these are quite close to the South African demographic and this is what my target audience is catered to which is the South African demographic.
I also wanted to use quite pastel but also quite earthy colour tones to represent this South African culture as everything we love is to do with the land and its animals. The colour theory is also quite warm toned and inviting for the viewer to read which is quite an important factor because as a graphic designer you need to be able to draw people into to look at your work and also inviting them to carry on reading and or looking at whatever information you were trying to portray.
For this project, I was asked to create a cover and a 5 double page spread editorial based on my dissertation which was a CERP paper – Creative Enterprise Research Proposal based on creating my own clothing brand.
Put some background information on my creative enterprise research proposal, I based my dissertation on creating my own clothing business looking into many topics such as branding, brand avoidance, advertising, promoting common marketing etc and also looking into the finance side of things I’m creating a business plan. Before I start my ideation process, I carried out some research on editorial design layouts, some of these images are previous students’ outcomes based on their dissertations.
All outcomes are very striking and contemporary with how the visuals are presented and showcased; all colour theories work well specifically to relate to the topic the students chose to base their dissertations on which is important when creating an aesthetic. The hierarchy of the typeface is strong which varies in line weights and point size to create hierarchy of type to showcase important pass information, quotes and to show where the reader should read 1st and so on, using certain accent colours to highlight keywords also works well.
I also researched into a few business editorial outcomes to get a sense of what a business editorial would look like, as my dissertation is based around creating and setting up my own clothing business.
The layouts are quite simplistic but very modern which works quite well to appear very professional which is an important factor. Not overly cluttered with information, good sense of negative space which is something I will take through to my ideation process.
