Branding development + Outcomes

I received feedback on how I could improve in the Branding module, so I went back to the idea stage and started to develop these ideas further from the feedback I was given.

Taking on this feedback was very useful in improving my work even further to create more stronger outcomes and making it more clear of what my exhibition is about. I used imagery to better showcase the subject much more clearly which is what the feedback was given to me. I also developed banners and billboards to make the subject of the exhibition clearer which I think is a much better outcome, so I went back over my initial research and looked at what I can take for inspiration and explain further why I used these as inspiration for my developed work.

Having feedback is a vital part of my practice as it helps me improve on my work to create stronger pieces of work. Working in a professional environment, having feedback is a regular occurrence in this industry to create stronger pieces to convey a message which is vital.

I have also updated my research and development file to show develop and also showing I can take direction within my work. I have attached my PDF file.Research and development hidden reality pdf

Interactive Portfolio

Temple-PortfolioPDF – I took inspiration from this template provided by the tutors to create my own portfolio. I decided I wanted to keep with the simplistic design aesthetic as I want the work to stand out and clash with anything.

20200607_165956I developed a logo to relate to what I like and I love nature so I wanted to incorporate that into my logo so I started off basic with the logo design and started to develop it further, making it look more professional and contemporary. I made sure I kept a list of what I needed to have within my portfolio.

Interactive Portfolio

I have attacthed a PDF version of my portfolio. Having a portfolio is a very important thing to have as a graphic designer as this shows off all our work to potential employers to then hopefully to get a job. Having a professional portfolio is vital as it shows you know what you are doing as a designer and also shows your skill set as a designer.

Website Building

I had to create a website to do an online portfolio and this is something I have never done before so it was quite daunting at first but luckily Matt create tutorial videos on how to make a website on WordPress which was so helpful as it enabled me to create a website with everything that was needed and I could always go back to these videos to refer back on.

This is another aspect I can say I know how to do which is vital for a graphic designer as we always need to keep up with the times and learns new techniques, software and how to make things for example a website. Having the online portfolio is also a great way to for people to see what work I have created and this could get me possible commission work which is beneficial.

Presentation – Field

I had to create a presentation on the two terms of field everyone had, for the first term I had Painting 101 with James Green, and for the 2nd term I had kablamooo again with James Green. I actually learnt quite a lot from both terms but specifically I learnt more from the 2nd term of field as I felt like I learnt more techniques and also that it related to my main subject practice, with making a comic, I can transfer this into graphics and use adobe software to create a digitized versions of comics which is another thing I can say I know how to do. I have attached a pdf version of my presentation which goes more in depth of what I have learnt and what I can take from both field projects.

Creating a CV + Email

Before creating my CV, I wanted to do some research into some potential inspiration and possible aspects I can take from and put into my CV,

I rather like the simplistic aspect from a few of the CV’s I found, such as layout, I will also take the title name with a logo instead of a photo as I want the focus to be on the information about me, my experience etc. The colours I want to use I will limit to 1 or 2 colours as I don’t want my CV to look too busy and possibly make the employer put off from hiring me to do jobs. For what to write in my CV, the tutors out a guide on moodle to help us on what we could possibly write and possible layouts also, what helped me the most is knowing what to write in the CV which was vital.

Doing research into CV’s has helped me out massively with creating a layout and design aesthetic. As a graphic designer you need to do your research on different aspects but right now CV design aesthetics and layouts helped me massively to create my CV. I personally feel like research is the most important step when figuring out ideas and doing development as it gives you ideas that you can develop to create a unique design.

I will not be posting my finalized CV on here as it contains personal information such as my email and phone number as I do not feel comfortable with having my personal information on here.

Email

I had to create an example email that could be sent to potential employers, this is a good way to practice sending a professional email to a possible employer, this gives me a sense of what manner to write in and also what kind of things to mention within an email, this will help me further in the future when emailing companies to request possible to work experience. I have attached my example pdf email. We were given a template on how this email should be like from the tutors and this helped considerably.

Final Outcomes

I have created a PDF of all my final outcomes that have been developed and finalized for the clients. This was definitely a learning experience working for a client and having a client brief to follow on what the clients are asking for me to create. With the pandemic going on, it did make this process a lot harder as I wasn’t able to meet with the clients in person so made this extremely difficult, and also having video chats with the tutors wasn’t the best as I couldn’t get onto the teams calls as it wouldn’t let me. This has enabled me to get a sense of working for a client in the future, gives me an insight to what is needed to do work for a client by following client briefs, being involved with asking questions etc about what the clients need and want for outcomes. This has helped me with my graphic design practice as I can say I have had experience with working with a client and what is expected from me also.

I have attached a PDF of all my developed final outcomes.

Persuasion Development

Even before I received formative feedback from my tutor, I was already developing and improving my work into a campaign.

I firstly started designing a logo and slogan for the campaign. I used dual tones of pink and blue, a paw print and a human hand as I think it relates to the campaign in how I am trying to help owners with the knowledge of feeding raw food. The slogan is very simple using 3 words ‘CleanPrepWash’, it is catchy and straight to the point and is relatable.

From my previous posters, I developed them further using the non aggressive imagery I created previously and decided to create posters based on facts and statistics and then creating a poster on what we can do as owners to make sure we prevent raw food poisoning not only for our pets but also for ourselves. Also created informational cards/leaflet for owners to take away on the DO’s and DONT’s of raw feeding to prevent food poisoning. Experimented with different variations of ideas from my previous poster designs.

Creating an Instagram page is a great way to reach the demographic of pet owners in general and pet owners who are feeding raw food to get information on it. Drawing sketches of possible Instagram layout, developing further with variation of layouts and also crated 3 image icons that are easy to identify with the slogan ‘CleanPrepWash’.

I wanted to create something that could get children involved, so I came up with a feeding chart for the kids to get involved with the feeding process, so I researched into different layouts of feeding charts and created ideas for it.

20200518_212353 I took different aspects such as the layouts as it was easy to understand and very clear on what you need to do for a feeding chart.

I also created some sticker ideas ranging in a variety of styles and colours. I decided to go with a simplistic design approach to keep with the design aesthetic of the whole campaign. Created a variety of designs and developed them even further into final outcomes.

I have also created a research and development file showing my work and development process to show how I have come to my final outcomes.Rachel Smith_R+D persuasion

Dissertation Prep Reflection

For this term’s constellation, the task was to start prepping and preparing for next year’s dissertation essay. We had to fill in a form stating the different topics we wanted to base our topics on for the dissertation and explain why and from this we were assigned to a tutor who best fit and also help with the specific topic we want to discuss further.

I wanted to base my dissertation on branding but more specifically discussing about creating and setting up my own clothing business next year or in the next couple years coming. Branding relates to my subject area I am studying, which is Graphic Communication, this has given me an insight of communicating through various visual languages techniques communicating the message we want to communicate to the target audience.

One of the first tasks I had to do was to investigate academic sources relating to branding, small business, creating a brand etc that I can use to support my discussion. I had to use MetSearch to find these sources, and I have only used this search a few times and I found it quite difficult to get the hang of it but when I had a workshop explaining how to use MetSearch effectively and correctly and this was very useful to have in place as it made the whole process a lot easier and simpler to do. I found various articles, book chapters etc. Also had to use Harvard referencing to correctly references these sources correctly.

I had to state throughout the essay what I would be discussing in the dissertation, going through different sections, creating an overview, dissertation plan etc, this was quite difficult to do at first but Sarah gave us examples of how we could lay out each section which looking back was very helpful and useful to create a cohesive and easy to understand how I will base my essay upon and creating a consistent plan to follow to ensure structure. This will help my essay have structure and also give myself a guide on what to write in each section.

Another thing I found difficult through out this whole process was trying to write academically as I have always struggled to do so suggested by Sarah they were some resources on Moodle that will help wit this and I found using these resources have helped me considerably whilst writing this out as I was able to plan out the structure of the essay into different sections dictating the subject topic of each section.

Doing this dissertation prep essay is good practice for the final Dissertation based on creating my own business. Writing and discussing such a large amount in an essay form is something I haven’t really done much of, this is the most I have written and it was really difficult at first as it was such a large amount of words to reach but looking back, one thing that helped me reach the word count was to create a plan of what I wanted to discuss and write about, writing out themes and discussing them further, breaking down sub topics and so on.

With the pandemic that is currently going in the world with the Corona virus, the way the teaching dynamic has been has now changed considerably, all the work, one to ones, tutorials etc have been transferred to online teaching and this has made this whole process a lot more difficult as I am not able to use and take advantage of certain aspects such as the library even though there is an online service, I was not able to find certain sources as the library only had a hard copy of it so this meant I couldn’t take the book out so I had to find alternative means of finding these sources which made it considerably difficult to come across these sources, so I had to use Google to find the book ‘Thinking Through Fashion’ which I found but I was only able to read a few chapter before having to pay which was not useful at all. Not being able to go into University it has made it difficult to focus and keep to a routine but remembering what Sarah said about having a schedule to make sure I keep to a routine and checking off weekly targets to ensure certain tasks are completed by designated dates but even doing this wasn’t easy as motivation was lacking but I was able to push through and complete the tasks that were given to me.

I think all and all, I have created an essay stating what my dissertation is going to be about and what will be discussed, the type of dissertation I chose, using academic sources to help answer the questions I have also t help enable me to start creating a plan and following steps to ensure creating a business that will be successful. I have stated everything clearly as a whole of what I am intending to do and following thus will help me complete this in my final year of university. But this was not an easy process to do because of the pandemic that is going on currently in the UK just made everything a lot more difficult not just for myself but also for other students but I was happy I was able to complete the task given to me to the best of my ability making sure I completed every task that was given, following the guide given to me by Sarah which helped a lot when sticking to a structured template throughout.

Final Outcomes

From the developed sketches I created in the previous blog post, I transferred these digitally. I also created my own imagery from the advice I was given. I used the app Procreate to create my non aggressive imagery as the client wanted,

These are my final developed outcomes. I still used the colour scheme relating to the ZERO2FIVE logo to keep it cohesive. I struggled with this project because of the circumstances going on, as I had problems with certain software and communication issues with people in my group, I felt there was a lack of communication from certain people in the group which made it difficult to work with them and to get information I needed.

When the feedback comes back, I will be developing further to create a full campaign, having different aspects which will improve this drastically.

Development – Sketches

From the feedback I received, I developed the strongest the ideas even further to create a more contemporary ideas.

I decided to use the phrase, ‘CLEAN, PREP, WASH’, as it was a simple and catchy phrase to use, so I decided to use that through out the posters to show the steps that need to be taken to ensure raw food hygiene and safety. I have drawn up a variety of more developed ideas to show variation through each idea and to show cohesiveness as a group of posters.

Having feedback and developing ideas is an important part of my practice to take on feedback and show further development of work to show also I can develop my ideas further to show more imagination of ideas and to show a variety of these ideas. And it also shows that I can take on feedback and showcase that I can take this on and improve my work further to create more modern and contemporary work.
