Painting 101 – Board with cardboard cutouts

I research into some images that will help with my painting.

Started off with a base layer20191209_122423 to build up the paintings within in different coloured layers.

Then for the cutouts, I decided with an oyster and a turtle.

The finished 1st draft of the painting using the images I took from the museum.

Painting 101 – Artists + Starting on board

Today we looked at a few artists that uses specific painting techniques that was shown to us previously. Looking at a variety of  artists and I researched into another artist related to what I would like to paint.

I will start on my board by priming it with emulsion to make sure I get the vibrancy of the colours, then putting a base colour on top of that.

Painting 101 -Combing drawings to create a new piece

From the drawings I did in the museum, I had to combine a minimum of 2 pieces to create a new piece of work, so I combined the jellyfish sculpture, Monet’s lilies, these wooden sculptures and a pattern texture from a painting. I drew a variety of sketches of ideas. But I also experimented with using other pieces from the museum to create some sort of cut out version.

Combined quite a variety to create each idea. The first image I went for an underwater theme and the 2nd more of a fantasy world using patters to create cutouts etc.

Painting 101 – Trip to Museum

Today we had to go to the National Museum of Wales to walk around and take some photographs of the work that was being exhibited there such as paintings, sculptures etc. I looked at various different types of exhibition pieces and took photos of the ones I liked the most and that I was drawn to.

From these, we had to draw 5 from the photos we took in the museum.

Reflection on this project as a whole

For this project I was given the task of creating a brand and a museum exhibition and creating various printed and digital ephemera. There were many themes I could choose from and I chose codification.

I firstly started off researching into codification then from that into police mental health but I came across a problem whilst using this as my primary theme, I found it quite hard to generate ideas for this and I was advised to change it so it would benefit me in the long run, so I researched into crime within the United Kingdom and this was a lot better for myself as I was able to generate Ideas and create a lot stronger ideas and final outcomes so this was very beneficial for me, because if I stayed with that original theme, my idea and design process would have been stunted which would have made me struggle to generate strong ideas, I also struggled with animation as I found this quite difficult before so I created something that was quite simple and something that I could create cleanly.. I feel what went well in this project was making the posters, brochure, tickets etc as this was something I have done before so this was a very strong part of the project for me, so this was more practice for myself and this is making my design practice and knowledge a lot stronger as a graphic designer.

I did really enjoy this project as it was something I have never done before but it was good practice for the future when I have to do work for a client in this specific field of work.

Portfolio Pages

portfolio pages

These are my portfolio pages I have done to showcase the work I have done such as the Brand Marque, The digital Ideas such as an app and an Instagram page, Wayfinding/signage and Promotional Installation.

Final Brochure Development

After creating the final brochure design, I decided to go back and develop and change a few aspects of the current brochure as I found that taking a step back and looking from a distance, I found that particular aspects of the brochure weren’t working cohesively together, so I decided to do some development to improve my brochure even further.

After doing my development, I transferred these ideas digitally to the already existing brochure design and changed mainly aspects on the first spread to make it look more cohesive.

Looking back at work and seeing what you can improve upon is always a vital part of my practice as a graphic designer because it shows I can reflect and take the initiative to improve and change aspects of my work if need be.

Tickets – Research, ideation, development and digitally rendered

Before creating tickets for the exhibition, I decided to do some research into exhibition ticket ideas to get a better sense of what goes on the ticket and how it can be laid out and presented. So from the research, I will take some inspiration from these images into my own ideation process to help me get a better sense of the ticket designs.

As previously mentioned from the research, I generated some hand drawn ideas for the tickets, generating some generic ideas for the tickets and then developing these ideas further again to create a more professional standard of work.

After doing some further development, I then transferred these development ideas digitally to create these tickets for exhibition.

So I decided to create a variety of possible final ticket outcomes. Doing research and development is an essential part of a graphic designers practice as you need to be able to come up with ideas from the research you have done to be able to create modern and contemporary layouts, development of work is also vital as it enables you to improve upon your current work to create more refined designs as you can not always go with the first idea you come up with, you need to show a selection and variation of ideas to see which one is the strongest over all to then carry through to the digitally rendering process.

Instagram Page and App

To show a form of digital ideas, I’ve decided to create an Instagram page and an app to show what the exhibition would look like through social media platforms and through an information platform.

Instagram page

For the Instagram page, I decided to get a royalty free image from unsplash, and edited a few things to change it to look like a page for the Hidden Reality Exhibition. I changed the page name, personal information and imagery posts to show what the Instagram page will look like in context.

App

For the app, I decided to take some inspiration from my poster design layouts through to my app to keep the design aesthetic consistent through out, so I’ve drawn some idea layouts to help me visualize what I want my app to look like. This will then be transferred onto Adobe XD, to digitize it.

This is the quick drawn up ideation for my app, I just wanted to show what specific aspects there are to the app, so this shows what would be in the app as I can not really show the app in full as it needs to be seen in context.

To show the app in context, I used an image from unsplash to show this app in context which is vital.

app

As a graphic designer showing all your work in context is a vital part of your practice. For example showing a client an app designer or for this project an exhibition showing each aspect in context is very important as it gives a sense of what these aspects would look like at a real life size and in the real world, and doing this will give off a more professional work ethic as it shows clients etc that you can show pieces of work in context so this gives the client etc a better sense of what things would look like in the real world.
