Tutorial with David

I had tutorial today with David to discuss about what I have done open till this point and to get feedback on what I can further improve on for the formative assessment feedback.

Scrum cap – show in context, showing a before and after

I was not sure if I should use one primary colour or using a mixture of two, green and pink but David suggested that I go with using both colours as it works quite well.

In my booklet, specifically the quote page – David suggested that I experiment him over the hierarchy

on the last page of the booklet David suggested taking out the hand visuals I drew, as it gives a different message than the other pages do.

Cards – the noise called, doesn’t really work, David suggested experimenting more with type and optical illusions together

David also suggested that I create a brand identity for this final major project, suggested that I think of a name and a logo to tie things all together which will make things more cohesive in the long run.

Having tutorials are quite helpful for development of current ideas, as it gives another person’s viewpoint and what possible aspects they think does and does not work as a whole.

Developed Ideas

CARDS

CARDS – from the initial ideas I previously did, I started to develop certain aspects of the cards even further. I primarily focused on the visuals for the cards make normal abstract and distorted to represent the symptoms of concussion even further, I experimented more with the layering of certain images, the pixilation of images, layering typography over one another to create some sort of a blurred but also double vision effect, experimenting with different sound waves to showcase the noise sensitivity etc. I also decided to create and short a typeface on procreate to go along with the blurred vision and see how I can incorporate this which I think I have done very well with the layers and the blurring effect. Some of the card visuals work a lot better than others, so using my initiative I will take forth the strongest visuals I think that represents concussion symptoms very well and showcase this for the tutorial I have which is coming up.

BOOKLET

BOOKLET – from the initial ideas I created, I developed the booklet idea even further by showing ideally what I would like my booklet to look like. Many experimenting with different types of visuals such as using optical illusions and hand rendered drawn imagery done by myself which will be showcased primarily on the front cover but also throughout certain pages. I have experimented with the placement of the titles, different lengths of body copy, experimentation of the typefaces etc to showcase it distorted but yet experimental viewpoint.

Initial Ideas

CARDS

Firstly, I started off with creating some possible card ideas, basing these cards based on the most common concussion symptoms. So, I experimented it with a variety of optical illusions to showcase these symptoms in an exciting way. I got inspiration from when David and I spoke when I had a previous tutorial, he stressed that I looked into an Anais Prudhomme, multiple sclerosis pack , which was really beneficial to research into and get inspiration from. From this these will be developed even further to further create distortion and represent the most common concussion symptoms also adding statistics alongside it which would relate better I’m work with the visuals.

The most common concussion symptoms are:

  • Headaches
  • Noise Sensitivity
  • Blurred Vision
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Slurred Speech
  • Double Vision

BOOKLET/EDITORIAL DESIGN LAYOUT

From the research I had previously carried out on booklets slash editorials, I have taken aspects I had previously mentioned in my previous blog into my ideations process. Taking experimentation of layouts, visual placements, limited colour palette, distorted visuals etc.

This will be developed even further and from this transfer it to be digitalised into a booklet.

POSTER DESIGN IDEAS

From the research I previously carried out to get inspiration for from my ideation process, I have created these initial ideas for what my posters could possibly look like in the future. Aspects I previously mentioned in my research, I carried through into these initial ideas.

SCRUM CAPS

For the Scrum caps, I wanted there to be a better safety measure for when spotting concussions at more domesticated level. So, I thought about having a scrum cap where it shows a symptom of concussion by having an impact on the head from a tackle etc, so from this I thought about having the optical illusions appearing on the scrum cap when getting hit and the certain type of illusion will relate to what symptom of concussion the rugby player has.

Research into Booklet/Editorials

Before I decided to any initial design ideas, I researched and looked into various editorial designs and layouts to get a better idea of what I want my booklets to look like but most important need to get inspiration from these booklets I researched to take forward into the designing process.

1st BOOKLET

  • Three grid column system
  • clean and modern
  • using an accent colour, which makes certain aspects of the editorial stand out
  • simplistic layout

2nd BOOKLET

  • I really liked the design aspect on the page, this could work really well in my work

3rd BOOKLET

  • colourway – three colours used, using a bright colour as an accent to give contrast
  • sans serif typeface used
  • good sense of hierarchy
  • using colour to highlight specific aspects of information

4th BOOKLET

  • three grid column system
  • limited colour palette
  • experimentation with layers

5th BOOKLET

  • three grid column system
  • limited colour palette – 3
  • variety of hierarchy of typefaces
  • using a two page spread for a quote , this works very well, as it gives more space to experiment with the hierarchy and weight of the body copy

6th BOOKLET

  • limited colour palette
  • contemporary layout with imagery and typeface
  • great use of hierarchy to create layers

7th BOOKLET

  • playful typeface for a title, experimental
  • limited colour palette

8th BOOKLET

  • distorted typeface
  • experimental

9th BOOKLET

  • The use of illusion creates a sense of movement from the image
  • hand rounded typeface which makes it more personal
  • limited colour palette

10TH BOOKLET

  • colour palate, create contrast and gives a contemporary feel.
  • variety of typefaces, gives contrast.
  • gives movement across the page.
  • three grid column system

11th BOOKLET

  • experimentation of type across the page
  • gives a sense of movement and playfulness.
  • variety of weight in the body copy
  • use of filled an outline type which creates dimension.

12th BOOKLET

  • limited colour palette
  • heading and subheading on a horizontal angle, which works very well
  • great system doesn’t work as well, 2Y which makes it harder to read

13th BOOKLET

  • distorted aspect is contemporary which would work well in my ideation process
  • three grid column system
  • sans serif typeface

14th BOOKLET

  • Simplistic design aesthetic
  • playful layout of typeface across the page, which creates movement within the layout

15th BOOKLET

  • three grid column system
  • left side, the distortion of the typeface works well, again creates movement which is quite experimental.

16th BOOKLET

  • green works well against the white and the black, gives contrast and makes certain aspects stand out a lot more.
  • variety of weights throughout

17th BOOKLET

  • great use of typeface throughout
  • pink background imagery works well to give movement, but also gives contrast against the black

From all the research I have carried out on booklet ideas, there are many aspects I will be taken forward into the design process from initial ideas. Doing research plays an important part in a graphic designers practise as a graphic designer will get all the inspirational ideas from research, her graphic designer does not do any research this will then cause them as a designer do not think out the box and create something new and contemporary.

Aspects I will be taking forward is: the three corn grid system, using a limited colour palette, experiment with hierarchy of typefaces, use and create my own experimental optical illusions, using the wave illusion possibly as a background accent, experiment with a variety of layouts and last we experiment with a variety of typefaces.

Anais Prudhomme – MS PACK

Yy tutor suggested that are looking to in Anais Prudhomme where she created a multiple sclerosis pack, and this should help me with my under these pack that I’m making for the younger generation.

She created an multiple sclerosis pack, the purpose is to create a communication object for the patients who recently got diagnosed with Ms.

The card game format is not an invitation to play with the disease, from this I can see that is a really good size for the reason and to use, is very legible and is easily understandable for the patients have been diagnosed with Ms.

The logo is a combination between white spots and MRI scans commercial this represents the results of the MRI scans where people have been diagnosed with Ms. The straight lines represent data, and which is simple yet evocative and abstract.

The pack contains 5 chapters – disease, general stats, forms, symptoms, and treatments.

General statistics – first set of cards the patient will read – what cities have shown overtime – about the population and probabilities or facts of the disease.

Origins of the disease may not be known; patients learn what can potentially increase The Simpsons impacts of multiple sclerosis.

Ms can appear in multiple forms, more or less serious. symptoms are an important thing to learn for the patients, this is where they can understand more about the disease and what to expect.

The last thing the patient should find in the box is the list of different available treatments for multiple sclerosis.

this has given me inspiration for my pack for the younger generation, it is quite abstract in how she’s created the logo and used the imagery throughout, and this is what I intend to do throughout my work. I will take inspiration from the cards as I find it’s quite a good way to show information in a very easy and simple way for the readers, The hierarchy of the typeface I also experiment with to make it quite playful but yet legible to the reader. Another aspect I think that works quite well is having the different topics within the pack I think I could implement this in my work to show Motor Neurone Disease, the symptoms and more information on it etc, which I think will be quite useful so from this I will take this forward and develop the cards even further.

From researching into this, I feel like it has been really useful to help me with my work , and also to understand what aspects I could put into this pack like an Anais Prudhomme has having the five sections, I think is a really good idea to have which I think I should take forward and possibly do 5 sections or even more depending on how much time I have but this is definitely an aspect I would like to explore.

Research into Poster Design + Thermochromic ink

Before doing any initial design work, I wanted to research into a variety of different poster designs to get more than idea of what I would like to take inspiration from and then from this create initial designs for my posters and then from that develop it even further.

1st Poster – What I like about this poster is that the colours are very striking, is very contemporary in how the designer has laid the type on top of one another, this creates depth and a sense of playfulness. From this I could take full of the aspect of lowering the typefaces using a variety of opacity levels to create an illusion and playing on the aspect of abstract an illusion.

2nd Poster – Using the limited colour palette works very well as the purple gives contrast against the stock black background. The illusion image used links to my project I am using optical illusions throughout which in this case relates. I do like the limited colour palette and using an accented colour gives much more contrast and using multiple colours, using multiple colours can make the Postal look cluttered and off putting into the viewer which I need to avoid as my posters need to be legible.

3rd Poster – Having repetition can work extremely well if it is using just a single word, so thinking about this further I feel like, but this would not work well as a poster but more so for the card pack as this would be a better idea and from this I can experiment with the layout, typefaces and a specific colour palette.

4th Poster – I find this poster design quite striking by using the black and white, this is a classic colour combination to use for contrast. The hierarchy of the typeface is exciting and gives a sense of movement as a typeface is decrease in in point size. As previously mentioned, this could work better for the card designs, as my posters will be having quite a fair amount of information on it so I feel like this would not work as well.

5th Poster – When I came across this poster, I was immediately drawn to it, the typeface with delayed effect is contemporary but also simplistic, it also gives a sense of movement throughout. From this, I will most definitely take the late typeface forward as I feel like this will work well within my project, also take for the layout for inspiration as it is quite different but interesting and from this I will develop it into my own ideas.

6th Poster – The group of posters are quite contemporary and modern by using this simple weighted Boulder with repetitive typeface for the heading. This aspect will be taken forward as inspiration as I feel like this could work well within my project.

7th Poster – This is quite abstract with the use of colour but when looking at it further, the legibility of the typeface is very hard to read and understand from a distance so I feel like this post idea would not work as well and I will not be taking this further for inspiration.

I have thought about possibly using the thermochromic ink in specfifc aspects such as the posters, cards and booklet as I feel this would work well to reveal a hidden message.

WHAT IS THERMOCHROMIC INK?

Thermochromic inks are heat sensitive and become semi-transparent to reveal a printed message underneath when a temperature change occurs. The most common heat reactive ink is used to reveal a message by heating it up, normally by rubbing it.

Thermochromic inks can be manufactured to react at different temperatures ranges – although they are most commonly set to react at temperatures close to normal human body temperature (this allows for the underlying message to be revealed through the warmth of a hand).

Black is the only colour that will mask other colours. (Different colours are available but they will only mask light tints of the same shade).

Chill and reveal inks are also available. These inks appear slightly translucent at room temperature, with a hint of the chosen colour, but change colour when chilled in a refrigerator.

Afterlife – Common Curiosity – Paul Felton and Alex Woolley

Background Information

  • Many disciplines – mainly based in Brandon and print design
  • It is a four-year-old company
  • Paul is based in Glasgow and Alex is based in London where they both work together online
  • Both worked together in a company called Prend in London
  • The company team is just pulling Alex, they keep the team small, which makes him closer to clients which makes them build a relationship with them
  • If they need help, they will bring it in if needed

Kilder – brand new craft beer business with a very unique name and location (arches in Moore St)

I found the identity of this brand quite intriguing; it shows how much research has gone into this to bring the brand identity together.

An important thing Paul has said is every designer will have their own forms of inspiration. Researching is the best way to get out of a designer’s block, and from this research, ideas will pop up and idea generation will start to flow again.

Paul mentioned to be more like a sponge, soak up as much information as possible, this will improve your work even further in the future.

TIP – Paul mentioned to not always start at the computer, always start at at your notebook , write down all your ideas, this allows you to have a large amount of ideas in one place and from there she can start researching into them.

Questions and answers

  1. how do you maintain projects? – Keep thinking about the end outcome, take regular breaks as this will reset your brain and you can keep working efficiently afterwards.
  2. best advice for graduates? – Pail believes there will many opportunities in the summer as COVID has allowed designers design online with this wouldn’t have really happened if COVID didn’t happen.

Afterlife – Gavin Leisfield

Gavin owns friendly Giants which is founded by himself and Sam with profile senior industry job. Gavin is the creative one and Sam is the planner.

His aim is to fill the world with better storeys, once the impact of people, the company has been around for three years now.

From this he ended up in London after travelling and having many jobs, later he moved to Amsterdam where he started to learn about flash and from this move back to England to do screenwriting.

At the age of 30, he felt lost and confused and from this gave himself an ultimatum where he had two months to find a job or go back home to Australia.

His first job was at day which is a digital agency where he was the head of the animation unit. Glass he carried out some work to build up his portfolio, from this he went on to another company, where he learned about film work, from there she became a freelancer today.

He freelanced for many years doing work for ITV and many other TV channels.

At the age of 40 he got married and travelled for six months with his partner in South America, he highly recommends to everyone to take time off and travel.

Little Hawk Days – he ended up with Brandon Doctor Who and other major companies. He also designed for the Netflix series Sex Education which he thoroughly enjoyed.

A Go Ape Swing Through – stages

  • The brief was to rebrand which would link to young children not just families
  • Change and transform
  • Family fun seekers
  • From this he looked at branding that would work, the logo wasn’t very strong enough for the brand to stand out amongst other brands.
  • We have acquired when he started to develop, the changes were very minimal but it’s something they can keep developing. governance I made the Brown come alive and making it more edgy and playful which was clearly needed.

Questions and Answers

Where do you get your inspiration from?

anything and everything you have a passion for to make a concept with and merging them together.

What led you to hire and grow your company and what qualities did they have over other applicants?

They wanted to hire in house designers that armoury and Kieran who are both graduates from Cardiff met, the skills Gavin looks for in people or who pay attention to detail but also look at the bigger picture.

What Maria and Kieran wish they knew before going into a job?

It is important to have other skills outside Adobe such as designing presentations which has to be presented to the clients.

Afterlife – Gareth Dunt

Gareth graduated in 2010 in a graphics course. He is from North Wales where he lived up until 2007 and then moved to Cardiff for University.

As he was growing up, he always thought he wanted to get a job in the police or the army but that change and he wanted to go into architecture but after doing work experience, he decided it wasn’t what he wanted to do.

At art college he spent the mojoruty of his time in typography and photograms, once he finidhed his course, he later went on to Univsersity.

After graduating, he worked in London and started an intership at Kin. He applied for a job at Dalzeil and Pow, a reatil design agency in London as a junior designer. He helped out with various brans such as Timberland and Primark but didnt feel fully on board with working with these brands. Gareth felt burnt out and decided to travel to Thailand.

WeWork approached him and asked him to join the in house graphics team for building.

Tutorial with David

Today I had a tutorial with David to discuss how iconic improve what I have come up with so far but also discuss possible ideas I have come up with but not yet have drawn down to showcase this in context. Firstly, I presented David with what I have done currently with the cards, and David suggested that I research into an artist named Anais Prudhomme who created a multiple sclerosis pack, which David said that this will link to my work perfectly and also help me with ideation for the cards. he also said that the black and white imagery works a lot better and is a lot stronger than the coloured designs I created so from this I will take forward into using black and white imagery in all aspects of my work, David also suggested about having one or two colours to highlight the issue of what I am trying to showcase which is the effects of concussion in rugby and how this can lead to motor neuron disease which I think could work perfectly well. Another comment ever had was to experiment more especially with the scrum caps to showcase most safety when getting tackled, so when a player experiences a symptom of concussion some sort of pattern will start to appear on the scrum cap.

All the adviser David has given me I will take forward to develop and improve my work. Having these tutorials with David are helpful and useful for myself and my practice as it gives me another view on my work, so they can spot things or suggest what types of research I can look into to further enhance my work.
